Each of Canada’s provinces has developed its own Provincial Nominee Program with various options for Canada immigration for individuals looking to immigrate and settle in a specific province in Canada. The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) accelerates the permanent resident application process for skilled and/or experienced workers, experienced business persons and their family members who want to settle in the province of British Columbia. If you meet the basic requirements below, the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program may be the quickest and easiest way for you to obtain permanent residence as opposed to some of the other Canada immigration options.

Provincial Nomination - British Columbia

Program Requirements:

  • The applicant must intend to settle in British Columbia.
  • The applicant must have the ability to become economically established in British Columbia.
  • If the applicant is already in Canada, they must maintain legal immigration status throughout the process.
  • If the applicant is outside Canada, they must not be prohibited from entering Canada and must have legal status in the country in which they are currently residing.
  • The applicant must not have an active refugee claim.

The Program is split into 2 categories:

Nominee applicants under this category of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program must either have a job offer of indeterminate length from a BC employer or have completed a Master’s or Doctorate degree at a BC post-secondary institution in either the natural, applied or health sciences. You may apply for the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program under the Strategic Occupations Stream if you fall into one of the following categories. You must be either:

  • a skilled worker;
  • a recent international graduate from an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution;
  • a recent masters or doctorate graduate from a BC post-secondary institution in the natural, applied or health sciences (no job offer required);
  • a designated health professional; or
  • an entry-level or semi-skilled worker in a select occupation.

The Business Immigrants Stream of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program is aimed at experienced business entrepreneurs who intend to invest in and actively manage an eligible business in the province of British Columbia. In order to apply for the British Columbia Provincial Nominee program under the Business Immigrants Stream you must meet the following basic requirements:

  • have the ability to establish yourself successfully in BC, and
  • develop and actively manage a business that will provide significant economic benefits to the province of BC.

In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must fit into one of the 3 categories of the Business Immigrants Stream in order to qualify for the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program under this stream. You may be eligible to apply under this stream if you meet the requirements of one of the following categories:

  1. Business Skills Category – applicants must have a minimum net worth of $800,000 CAD and make a minimum investment of $400,000 CAD
  2. Regional Business Category – applicants must have a minimum net worth of $400,000 CAD and make a minimum investment of $200,000 CAD. This category is limited to businesses outside of Vancouver and the Abbotsford Metropolitan Areas.
  3. Strategic Projects Category – this category allows foreign companies to establish a business in BC and allows the company to bring in up to five key employees who may apply to become Canadian Permanent Residents. The company must make a minimum equity investment of $500,000 CAD and create at least 3 jobs for current Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents for each foreign worker that they are nominating.

Keep in mind that there are many additional requirements that you must meet in addition to the basic requirements for each category. The purpose of the Business Immigration Stream is to promote economic growth by creating and maintaining jobs in Canada for permanent residents and citizens of Canada. Therefore, you must show that you will be a part of this economic growth before you will be accepted for this program.

 

Applicants for the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program must show that they will be an asset to Canada and will actively and continuously aid in the growth of the economy and the creation of jobs for Canadians. You must prove that you are in no way a threat or a liability to current citizens and permanent residents of Canada. Meeting all of the requirements described above does not guarantee you approval into the program. As every situation is different, it is important to assess your individual needs and responsibilities on a case-by-case basis before deciding which immigration option is best for you and your family.

The Province of Alberta invites foreign workers, students, and trades-persons who qualify to apply for one of the following categories of the Alberta Provincial Nominee Program:

The Province of Manitoba has designed their Provincial Nominee Program to invite qualified skilled workers and business people looking to immigrate to Canada. If you are a skilled worker or business person who is looking to settle and open a business or start a farm in the province of Manitoba then you may qualify to apply for the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program. To qualify for this program as a Skilled Worker you must meet the requirements for age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability. The Province of New Brunswick offers exciting opportunities for skilled workers and business applicants who are interested in immigration to Canada’s east coast. The province of Ontario has created an employer-driven program which requires that candidates have a permanent full-time job offer from an Ontario employer or a PhD. from a publicly funded Ontario University. There are three categories available under this program:

  • Ontario PNP General Category – for foreign workers with a full-time job offer and at least 2 years of work experience.
  • International Students – for students who have a job offer, a PhD, or a Master’s degree.
  • Investors – for individuals or companies looking to make an investment in the province of Ontario

Prince Edward Island has split their Nominee Program into seven (7) categories. If you are a worker, student or business owner who is interested in immigrating and settling in Prince Edward Island, you may fit into one of the following categories:

  • Skilled Workers Category – you must have a job offer in a skilled position along with education and training consistent with the position offered.
  • Critical Workers Category – you must have a job offer in one of the province’s in-demand occupations (follow the link below to see a list of these occupations).
  • International Graduates Category – you must have graduated from a full-time study at an accredited Canadian University or College within the past two years, have a minimum of six (6) months of work experience and a job offer in a skilled position.
  • Family Connections Category – if you have family members residing in Prince Edward Island for more than two years as Canadian permanent residents or citizens with a regular source of income and an unblemished personal history, your family may nominate you for this category as long as you are willing and able to work.
  • 100% Business Ownership Category – you must meet all the requirements to establish and operate a business in Prince Edward Island (see link below for full list of requirements)
  • Partial Business Ownership Category – if you control more than 1/3 of the equity in the business and meet the other requirements to establish and operate a business, you may qualify for the program under this category.
  • Work Permits Category – you must be eligible and willing to apply for approval of a work permit for the Prince Edward Island business where you intend to work and invest and meet all the requirements to establish and operate a business in Prince Edward Island.
