Each of Canada’s provinces has developed its own Provincial Nominee Program with various options for Canada immigration for individuals looking to immigrate and settle in a specific province in Canada. The Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program (NTPNP) is an immigration program operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories through an agreement with the Federal Government of Canada. This program allows for faster immigration to Canada for skilled workers and business people who are interested in settling in the Northwest Territories.
Program Options
The Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program has four different categories available for eligible applicants. You may be nominated for the Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program if you meet all of the requirements for one of the following four categories.
To qualify under the Skilled Worker category of the Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program, an applicant must:
- Have a permanent full-time job offer from a qualifying Northwest Territories employer in an occupation that falls in levels A, B, or 0 in the National Occupational Classification Matrix;
- Have the required certification or accreditation for the specific trade or occupation;
- Have a license or be accepted by the Territorial body governing the occupation or trade, if applicable;
- Have the ability to conduct basic communications in the official language of the work place; and
- Not be a refugee claimant.
The employer must:
- Have been registered and in operation for at least a year;
- Show that they tried to recruit a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for the job vacancy;
- Show that the compensation for the job is commensurate with local standards; and
- Obtain a Labour Market Opinion from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) for the position being offered.
To qualify under the Critical Impact Worker category of the Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program, an applicant must:
- Have a permanent full-time job offer from a Northwest Territories employer in a hospitality or service sector occupation that falls in levels C or D in the National Occupational Classification Matrix;
- Have a temporary work permit and have worked in the position in the Northwest Territories for 6 months;
- Show sufficient financial supports or settlement supports in the Northwest Territories;
- Have the required work experience for the occupation;
- Have the ability to conduct basic communications in the official language of the work place; and
- Not be a refugee claimant.
The employer must:
- Have been registered and in operation for at least six months;
Show that they tried to recruit a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for the job vacancy; - Show that the compensation for the job is commensurate with local standards;
- Be in good standing with the Employment Standards Office; and
- Obtain a Labour Market Opinion from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) for the position being offered.
To qualify under the Entrepreneur Business category of the Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program an applicant must:
- Show a proposal to start or purchase a business in the Northwest Territories;
- Invest a minimum of $300,000 CAD into starting or buying a business in the Yellowknife area, or invest a minimum of $150,000 CAD into starting or buying a business outside the Yellowknife area;
- Have a personal net worth of $500,000 CAD if their intended business is in the Yellowknife area, or a minimum net worth of $250,000 CAD if their intended business is outside the Yellowknife area;
- Have $75,000 CAD kept in a trust account, to be released upon the completion of a Performance Agreement based on the applicant’s business proposal;
- Show a knowledge and understanding of the Northwest Territories and its economy;
- Be able to communicate in one of the official languages of the province; and
- Have the experience and education necessary to implement their business plan.
To qualify under the Self-Employed Business category of the Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program, an applicant must:
- Have a profession or occupation that has been listed as a professional skill shortage in the Northwest Territories;
- Satisfy a certification or accreditation requirement for the profession or occupation;
- Be licensed/ accepted by the body governing the profession, if applicable;
- Be able to conduct basic communications in an official language;
- Show a knowledge of the Northwest Territories of its social, economic and weather conditions;
- Demonstrate that he/she has sufficient financial resources to start and operate the professional practice and to support himself/ herself and any dependents for a period of six months;
- Submit a detailed business plan for the business or practice.
Applicants for the Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program must show that they will be an asset to Canada and will actively and continuously aid in the growth of the economy and the creation of jobs for Canadians. Keep in mind that meeting the basic requirements for the program does not guarantee you approval into the program. The process of applying for the Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program varies depending on your current situation and status as well as many other important details. The Province of Alberta invites foreign workers, students, and trades-persons who qualify to apply for one of the following categories of the Alberta Provincial Nominee Program:

The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) accelerates the permanent resident application process for skilled and/or experienced workers, experienced business persons and their family members who want to settle in the province of British Columbia. This program is split into two categories: Strategic Occupations and Business Immigration. To apply for the BC Provincial Nominee Program under one of these two categories, you must meet the basic requirements set by the province of British Colombia:
- Intend to settle in British Columbia
- Be able and willing to become economically established in British Columbia
- Have legal status in your country of residence, whether you are in Canada or outside of Canada
- Must not have an active refugee claim
In addition to these basic requirements, you must qualify under either the Strategic Occupations or Business Immigration category and satisfy all the requirements of the category under which you are applying.

The Province of Manitoba has designed their Provincial Nominee Program to invite qualified skilled workers and business people looking to immigrate to Canada. If you are a skilled worker or business person who is looking to settle and open a business or start a farm in the province of Manitoba then you may qualify to apply for the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program. The province of Newfoundland has created three categories under which you may qualify for the Newfoundland Provincial Nominee Program. The province of Ontario has created an employer-driven program which requires that candidates have a permanent full-time job offer from an Ontario employer or a PhD. from a publicly funded Ontario University. There are three categories available under this program:
- Ontario PNP General Category – for foreign workers with a full-time job offer and at least 2 years of work experience.
- International Students – for students who have a job offer, a PhD, or a Master’s degree.
- Investors – for individuals or companies looking to make an investment in the province of Ontario

Prince Edward Island has split their Nominee Program into seven (7) categories. If you are a worker, student or business owner who is interested in immigrating and settling in Prince Edward Island, you may fit into one of the following categories:
- Skilled Workers Category – you must have a job offer in a skilled position along with education and training consistent with the position offered.
- Critical Workers Category – you must have a job offer in one of the province’s in-demand occupations (follow the link below to see a list of these occupations).
- International Graduates Category – you must have graduated from an full-time study at an accredited Canadian University or College within the past two years, have a minimum of six (6) months of work experience and a job offer in a skilled position.
- Family Connections Category – if you have family members residing in Prince Edward Island for more than two years as Canadian permanent residents or citizens with a regular source of income and an unblemished personal history, your family may nominate you for this category as long as you are willing and able to work.
- 100% Business Ownership Category – you must meet all the requirements to establish and operate a business in Prince Edward Island (see link below for full list of requirements)
- Partial Business Ownership Category – if you control more than 1/3 of the equity in the business and meet the other requirements to establish and operate a business, you may qualify for the program under this category.
- Work Permits Category – you must be eligible and willing to apply for approval of a work permit for the Prince Edward Island business where you intend to work and invest and meet all the requirements to establish and operate a business in Prince Edward Island.
